Notes from the Director

Richard Seyd

It is with great pleasure I embark on my first production at Magic Theatre. I lived and worked in San Francisco from 1975-1993. In all that time I never directed a play at the Magic. Part of the reason was that I was a core member of Eureka Theatre in the 80's and there was little or no artistic crossover during that time. I do have important life connections with the Magic however. I first saw my late wife, Sigrid Wurschmidt, on stage at the Magic in 1978 in Wendy Wasserstein's Uncommon Women and Others. I think I fell in love with her spirit that night. Sigrid did much of her early work at the Magic and always had a great affection for the theatre.

I am very glad my first production here is with a San Francisco playwright, Wesley Moore, for whom Magic Theatre is also very important. Wes and I have been engaged in an artistic collaboration on A Reckoning for over two years. It has been a great collaboration for me, aided immeasurably by Wes' ability to accept some of my ideas while remaining true to his core vision.

I pass this production onto you, the Magic Theatre audience, on behalf of both of these fine artists.
