Internships at magic Theatre

Magic Theatre guarantees you will be in the thick of theatre operations.  Interns receive hands-on training and experience while working side-by-side with top theatre professionals.

Magic Theatre currently offers Production, Artistic, and Development Internships.  Each intern will work primarily in one of these departments.  Depending on the theatre’s needs and the intern’s interests, interns may also occasionally be asked to work on special projects in other departments.

Dates and Time Commitment 

The Development Internship is offered through the rest of the 08-09 Season. Must be available for 10-14 hours a week, and preferably available for occasional evening and weekend events. 

Artistic Internships are offered on a Season by Season basis.  Deadline to apply for the 09-10 Season is June 1st, 2009.

Artistic interns are expected to work 3-4 days per week, with occasional evening and weekend events. 

Production Internships are offered on a show-by-show basis.  Hours are determined on an individual basis. 

Development Internship

Magic Theatre is looking for an intern to support Magic's fundraising programs. Reporting to the Development and Special Events Associate, the Development Intern will aid in the daily operations of the Development office as the theatre prepares for its next two productions. This is an exciting opportunity for those interested in being in a fast-paced working environment and gaining a variety of skills and experiences from an arts organization, from administrative duties and data entry, to hands-on work with event planning. This is an unpaid internship through the rest of the 08-09 season.

Responsibilities:
Perform database entry and processing gifts; prepare and implement mailings, acknowledgement letters, invitations, etc.; perform filing and maintain an organized work space in the Development Office; assist in designing invitations, web content, and materials; support the logistical planning of upcoming fundraising events; assist in the set-up, execution, and breakdown of fundraising events; participate in the planning of Magic’s annual gala.

Qualifications:
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program or has a 4-year college/university degree; experience in an arts organization preferred; knowledge of and enthusiasm for theatre a plus; excellent written and verbal communications skills; exceptional attention to detail; interested in a career in non-profit development; experience with database systems a plus.

Artistic Internship Duties

We have three specific Artistic Internships.

Artistic Director’s Apprentice:
The Artistic Director’s Apprentice works closely with the Artistic Director assisting with day-to-day tasks such as taking phone calls and scheduling meetings, as well as line-producing two productions during the season. Line-producing duties include coordinating casting and company management, supporting the director, and supporting contextual events.

Dramaturgy Apprentice:
The Dramaturgy Apprentice works closely with the Head of New Play Development. Duties include reading and critiquing scripts, managing the script database, writing and proof-reading materials for programs and e-blasts, providing rehearsal dramaturgy, and producing public staged readings.

Artistic Intern:

The Artistic Intern is responsible for daily artistic administration in Casting and Literary. In Casting, the intern processes headshot submissions, updates the casting database, assists with auditions, and attend shows and report back to the casting director. In Literary, the intern logs scripts, assists with playwright correspondence, and reads and critiques submissions. The Artistic Intern also supports our various public staged readings and other artistic events.

Production Internship Duties During the season Production interns are involved in running shows backstage or in the booth. They also build and paint scenery/ props, hang and focus lights, procure and build costumes, and operate and maintain the sound systems. In addition, interns are involved in the daily maintenance of the Magic’s two theatres, shop space, and storage areas. The specific responsibilities of individual interns will be based on a combination of the needs of the Magic and the professional interests of the prospective intern. Please be advised, technical interns should be able to lift at least 40lbs.
